Healthcare Workshops

A series of virtual programs that combine hands-on technology with employer and postsecondary expertise is designed for high school students who are interested in career tech pathways. Cincinnati State, Miami University, Southern State, University of Cincinnati and area employers are collaborating to offer Friday morning programs through November.

HEALTHCARE

Benchtop Careers ENGAGE
Milene Donlin – Cincinnati State Bioscience
Demonstration
Love science but not sure what to do with it?  Check out an exploration of benchtop careers!  In this session we will explore different types of careers building on biological academic pathways including forensic science, research and development, pharma and vaccine development and more. See how scientists make a difference in a multitude of benchtop settings.

Respiratory Therapy ENGAGE

Respiratory Therapy is a credentialled and licensed specialized health care field where practitioners are trained to work therapeutically with people suffering from pulmonary disease.  RTs are in very high demand so jobs are plentiful.  Check out this session if you want to learn more about the profession and how to get started!

Nursing ENGAGE

Are you thinking about a future career in nursing?  Have you seen all of the media coverage and social media posts wondering; how could I get started?   Come to this session with questions and know that nursing is so much more than COVID, handing out pills, and bedpans.  Will talk about the nursing profession and some expectations you can look forward to in your education.

Medical Assisting ENGAGE

Medical Assisting is a career in high demand in the medical field. MA’s work in outpatient settings such as your primary care doctors office or urgent cares.  If you are looking for a program in the healthcare field that gets you working in just under a year, MAC is a good place to start.  During the session we will discuss the basics of what you as a patient should expect when visiting a doctor’s office and the patient’s rights to expect safety and privacy in an office environment.  We will also discuss PPE, disinfection and sanitization.

Surgical Technology ENGAGE
LeVon Moore and Deb Shumate – Cincinnati State Surgical Technology
Demonstration
Surgical Technologists participate in the care of the surgical patient before, during and after surgery. During operative procedures, the Surgical Technologist functions as the scrub person on the sterile team. Their responsibilities include preparation/set up of sterile operative equipment, supplies, and instrumentation skills throughout the surgical procedure.  In addition, the Surgical Technologist can function as a second assistant, who is also a member of the sterile team. Also, Surgical Technologists may assist in the circulating role. STs are in high demand until the year 2029.  The average growth rate for all occupations is 4 percent. ST is 7% faster than average. Practical Nursing Certificate ENGAGE

Make a difference and start changing lives when you begin your life as a nurse.  The Practical Nursing Certificate Program can be a stepping stone to an advanced degree; however, that is not necessary to begin working in the nursing field, making this an ideal role for those interested in breaking into healthcare quickly.  Become a NURSE in 3 semesters which is less than a year and then begin working while continuing your educational path.

Emergent Medicine ENGAGE

911, yeah we’re on our way……  In a world where everything is happening, emergent medicine is the future here, now.  The Emergency medical field is like no other .You can earn a certificate for entrance in the field with as little as one semester or create a plan and get a working degree in two years.Fire Service Technology and Paramedic Sciences there’s nothing quite like it.

Medical Laboratory Technician ENGAGE
Angela Miller – Cincinnati State Medical Laboratory Technician

A medical laboratory technician (MLT) uses laboratory skills, computers, technology, and knowledge of pathology to provide information needed by the physician to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease.  In clinical chemistry, for example, the MLT determines enzyme levels to diagnose a heart attack, glucose levels to monitor diabetes, and cholesterol levels to prevent heart disease. In hematology, the MLT studies blood cells to diagnose anemia and leukemia. In immunohematology, the MLT prepares blood for transfusions. In the microbiology department, the organism causing an infection is identified and antimicrobials for treatment are determined.

Exercise Science and  Personal Training ENGAGE

Do you wonder how to take your passion for fitness & health and turn it into a career?  You can become a nationally certified Personal Trainer in two semesters.  If you are thinking about becoming an Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Strength Coach or Cardiac Rehab Specialist, learn how you can get started on these career paths with an associates degree in Exercise Science.
